Many websites and insurance companies claim to provide online insurance quotes, but there are 3 different types of online quote services:

Online to Telephone
This type of service is relatively common especially with direct insurers. The user goes onto the internet and visits a website where he/she fills in a very basic online call-back form. The insurance company or agent then uses the telephone number submitted on the form to call the user and provide a real time insurance quote. Online to Email/Telephone
This method is more common with insurance comparison sites. The user goes onto a website where they complete a form with enough fields to provide insurance quotes. The insurance company or broker then generates the quotes using this data and either emails the quotes to the user or calls and immediately provides a quote. An example of this type of site is InsuranceHound.

Instant Online
This type of service involves the user completing an detailed online form and immediately being presented with quotes. Instant online quotes are not very common in South Africa, due to reluctance on the part of insurance companies to ‘compete’ against each other. Some sites like Hippo do provide instant online quotes, but they are from insurance companies and brokerages that all fall under the same group. This means they aren’t really competing against anyone other than themselves.
